Australian Wine Industry Challenges

Penfolds Winemaker Peter Gago Discusses Success of Australian Wine Industry and Challenges for Maintaining Growth

In recent years Australia has grown to become the fourth largest wine exporter in the world, exporting to over 100 countries. In 1991, exports were $200million; by 2004 the figure had grown to $2.7 billion. Clever marketing and good value for money have played a strong role in creating this surge in popularity.

Australian wine makers were the first to include the name of the grape variety on the wine label, which has helped make it more accessible to consumers. If the Australian wine market is to continue its growth, it will have to fend off increasing competition from other developing wine-producing countries such as Chile, South Africa and New Zealand.
